Whether you've never touched a piano or you played as a teenager and stopped, we start with music you actually want to play. Classical, popular, blues, jazz, or a mix of all of it.
Along the way we work on:
- reading music, at whatever speed suits you
- chord symbols, so you can play from a lead sheet or a songbook
- hand position and technique that keeps you comfortable for a full hour at the keys
- scales and keys, brought in when a piece needs them
- pedalling
- playing by ear, if that appeals to you
You don't need an acoustic piano. A digital piano or keyboard with 88 weighted keys works well, and I'd rather you start on whatever you have than wait until you've bought something.
If you want exam repertoire, I've taken students through the Royal Conservatory syllabus for years. If you never want to sit an exam, that's just as normal here.
